As you see in title,this equation is (a+b)²=36 and (a-b)²=24.

What is the value of ab if (a+b)²=36 and (a-b)²=24 ?

I hope you are students.so you can learn with me.so let's start

METHOD 1:-

(a+b)²=36

That means (a+b)=√36
                                =6
So, a+b=6 
Hence a=6-b mark it as (I) 

(a-b)²=24 

That means (a-b)=√24
                               =2√6
So a-b=2√6
So now, putting the value of (I) of a

                    6-b-b=2√6
                        6-2b=2√6
                         2b=6-2√6
                           b=2(3-√6)/2
                            b=3-√6
Now putting the value of b in (I)
        a=6-3+√6=3+√6
  Therefore ab=(3-√6)(3+√6)    
                          =(3)² - (√6)²   [As we know
                           =9-6=3           (x+y)(x-y)=x²-y²]

Hence ab=3

Now,i know this is very long.We have to learn many things.so if you want any easy method then check this method below.

METHOD 2:-

(a+b)²=36

a²+2ab+b²=36  [(a+b)²=a²+2ab+b²] 
a²+2ab+b²=36...........(1)

(a-b)²=24 

a²-2ab+b²=24......….....(2)

Now substracting the two equation

(a²+2ab+b²)-(a²-2ab+b²)=36-24
a²+2ab+b²-a²+2ab-b²=12
           4ab=12     [a² and b² are removed because of 
              ab=12/4          opposite sign]
                   =3

Therefore ab equals to 3.
